Social Learning, Social Media: Brothers in Arms

 

 

Is it me or does it seem that most vendors in the LMS/LCMS market still believe that with some smoke and mirrors, you won’t realize that social media actually must be integrated into social learning for it to exist? Or do they just drop the word, «social media », and rather say, «social learning and web 2.0 »?

After all, many have a blog, wiki, rss feed, a Facebook like page, with profile, inc. an image, friends can connect and see comments, and the end user can tweet within the LMS. 

See, it is social learning. Not!!!

Brief Background

Tim Berner-Lee, Founder of the World Wide Web and coined the term «Web 2.0» :

Web 2.0 is of course a piece of jargon, nobody even knows what it means. If Web 2.0 for you is blogs and wikis, then that is people to people. But that was what the Web was supposed to be all along. And in fact, you know, this ‘Web 2.0,’ it means using the standards which have been produced by all these people working on Web 1.0.

It’s all about Hype

Web 2.0 is still being hyped in the market, as the upcoming Web 2.0 expo clearly shows and some argue that social media some grew up within the web 2.0 process.

Nevertheless, social media has overtaken its Web 2.0 buzz, now standing and expanding on its own. The expo? Features social media solutions. When people scour the job markets, employers post seeking social media experts. Social media covers over 15 categories and grows as more offerings slide in there. With APIs and mashups, who knows where it can go.

Social Learning & Social Media

Can one exist with out another? The answer is no. Social Learning = Learning, Collaboration & Communication. To achieve this and move forward, social media must be integrated into the platform or mechanism.

I often see vendors in the e-learning space that believe that social learning is similar to what I listed at the beginning of this article. While some vendors in the LMS/LCMS space will argue that they offer similar «real life » social media offerings in their solution, the key here is «similar ».

Real life social media, is just that « real time, real life ». Open sharing of information, collaboration and communication. Does this exist in your system ? Can you tweet in real time in your LMS and people outside of your system see your tweet ? Then, people outside of the LMS tweet and you (as the end user) can see the tweet in real time in the LMS ? This goes beyond just your  «friends » within the system, and extends to the outside real world.

I know of only one LMS that does this, just one. The others who offer the «similar », offer just that «similar », but not the full open sharing of information. A counter argument for not offering the «real life» experience is the fear or someone saying something, or security issues, but for most companies, it is really the former. After all, if you are enabling your employees to read their internet emails, surf the web or even Tweet during company time, security is not the concern.

One vendor created a «filter» system so the administrator would type in words that were unacceptable, thus when the end user typed them, in real time, they appeared as *** or not at all. Sadly, they do not offer it as an open sharing of information internal to external system, rather just for end users in the LMS, when writing on a blog, wiki, etc. At least it is a start.

A filter system could be created tied to any open sharing of information internal LMS to real world and back again and work.

Hello?

End users want the ability to open only one window and have everything contained within it. If you could have your real time Twitter, Linkedin feeds, Facebook and some other social media capability, and your end user did not have to open any other screens, what is the likelihood, that your system would increase in sales?

An Emerging Trend in Social Media: Geolocating

While it has been around for awhile, you are really starting to see traction on it. You sign up an account online, select some options, and you are able to see where your friends are in real time on a map or as it says «location».

Download the solution’s app to your smart phone or tablet, and now on the go you can see in real time where all your friends are located (those who signed up for the service). The social media solution utilizes your built in GPS with your smart phone, tablet or ties it into your IP address via your laptop, netbook, etc, regardless if you are at home or in the coffee shop.

Social Media LMS or Virtual Communities or Portals : Ultimate Learning Experience

I want the ultimate learning experience, so not only do I want to select and have friends follow me within my LMS and chat with them or have them read my feeds, but I want to know where they are and vice versa, so if we want to meet up we can. We want to take that next level of collaboration and communication. We wish to expand on another social media form - «events» - see meetup.com as an example; and intertwine them.

So, what can we do? Add geolocating as part of our social learning services. Now, I want an even greater experience, so I will add a virtual world.

Toss in scheduled webinars, real time livecasting, real time video streaming, avatars that have the face image of your end user and not Sigmund the Sea Monster, communicate in real time with mini video screens between learners - beyond just texting, and while you are at it… track it… everything, full analytical data. Yeah, you can toss in e-commerce, APIs, Mashups, and add any social media you can think of -slideshare presentations? You bet. App Sharing? Simple.

How far are we away from such a real world application? Not that far away, especially as technology, access speed (for the end user) and the on-going growth of social learning continues. 5 years? Easily.

New term: Social Learning 3D - Learning, Communication, Collaboration, 3D experience

Your LMS is your hub, a virtual learning community truly exists - to/from your LMS. Eliminating a piece here or there and a patchwork of odds and ends.

It would require a lot of capabilities in one solution to tap into various learners’ tastes, wants and companies training goals; something LMS/LCMS vendors always seem to be one step behind. It would be something someone hasn’t seen before, which for most vendors is unacceptable, but it could be done.

C'est moi ou il semblerait que la plupart des fournisseurs de LMS et de LCMS continue de croire qu’avec un léger nuage de fumée, vous ne réaliserez pas que les médias sociaux doivent être, en réalité, intégrés dans le social learning pour lui permettre d’exister ? Ou bien ont-ils juste enlevé le mot "social media" pour mieux dire, «social learning et web 2.0"?

Après tout, beaucoup de LMS proposent des blogs, un wiki, un flux RSS, une page à la Facebook avec un profil riche, ou vos « amis » peuvent se connecter et voir vos commentaires, et une sorte de Twitter. « Regardez, c’est cela le social learning ! » Et bien non !


Bref historique

Ecoutons Tim Berner-Lee, un des fondateurs du World Wide Web, et qui est à l’origine du terme web 2.0 : le terme "Web 2.0 est bien entendu du jargon dont personne ne sait encore ce que cela signifie. Si le Web 2.0 est pour vous les blogs et les wikis, alors on parle de relation de personne à personne. Mais c'est ce que le Web était censé être depuis le début. En fait vous savez, ce Web 2.0, il s'agit d'utiliser les normes qui ont été développées par toutes ces personnes qui travaillent sur le Web 1.0. "

« It's all about Hype »

Web 2.0 est encore à la mode sur le marché, comme la Web 2.0 Expo à venir le montre clairement, et certains affirment que certains médias sociaux ont grandi au travers des processus du web 2.0.

Néanmoins, les médias sociaux ont dépassé ce buzz du Web 2.0, désormais permanent et s’autoalimentant. Le thème de l’expo? Les caractéristiques des solutions de médias sociaux. Les médias sociaux couvre désormais plus de 15 catégories dans le salon et continue à étendre leur emprise. Avec les API et autres mashups, qui sait où ils peuvent aller.

L'apprentissage social et les médias sociaux

Peut-on exister sans un autre? La réponse est non.Apprentissage social = apprentissage, collaboration et communication. Pour atteindre cet objectif et aller de l'avant, les médias sociaux doivent être intégrés dans les plateformes ou les mécanismes d’apprentissage.

Je vois souvent des vendeurs dans l'espace e-learning qui croient que l'apprentissage social est similaire à ce que j’ai répertorié au début de cet article. Tandis que certains fournisseurs de LMS / LCMS vous diront qu'ils offrent une expérience similaire de « vrai vie » dans leur solution que ne le font les médias sociaux, le point clé est ici le « similaire ».

La vrai vie dans les médias sociaux, c’est juste cela : temps réel, vie réelle. Le libre partage de l'information, la collaboration et la communication. Est-ce que cela existe dans votre système? Pouvez-vous communiquer en temps réel dans votre LMS et que les gens en dehors de votre système le voient? Et inversement ? Cela va au-delà de vos "amis" au sein du système, et s'étend vers le monde extérieur réel.

Je ne connais qu'un seul LMS qui fasse cela, juste un. Les autres qui offrent des «similaires», offre justement que des « similaires », mais pas le partage complet et ouvert de l'information. Les arguments pour ne pas offrir une expérience de « vraie vie" sont soit la peur, soit que quelqu'un dise quelque chose, ou encore les questions de sécurité. Mais pour la plupart des entreprises, c'est vraiment la peur qui l’emporte sur tout. Après tout, si vous permettez à vos employés de lire leurs emails, de surfer sur le web ou même d’utiliser twitter durant leur temps de travail, la sécurité n'est pas concernée.

Un fournisseur a créé un système de filtre pour que l'administrateur puisse entrer les mots jugés inacceptables. Lorsque l’utilisateur les tapent, ils apparaissent en temps réel comme ***. Malheureusement, ils n'offrent pas un partage ouvert de l'information – de l’interne vers le monde extérieur, mais juste pour les utilisateurs finaux du LMS, lors de l'écriture sur un blog, wiki, etc. Au moins c'est un début.

Les utilisateurs finaux souhaitent avoir la possibilité d’avoir tous les services en n’ouvrant qu’une seule fenêtre. Si vous pouviez voir en temps réel votre twitter, vos flux Linkedin, ou Facebook plus quelques autres médias sociaux, et que vous n’ayez pas besoin d’ouvrir d’autres écrans, quelle est la probabilité que votre système contribue à l’augmentation des ventes?

Une nouvelle tendance dans les médias sociaux: la géolocalisation.

Alors qu'elle existe depuis un petit moment, vous commencez à en apercevoir l’intérêt. Vous souscrivez à un compte en ligne, sélectionnez les options, et vous voila en en mesure de voir où sont vos amis en temps réel sur une carte ou comme on dit "localisés".

Télécharger l’application sur votre smatphone ou sur votre tablet, et maintenant sur la route, vous pouvez voir en temps réel où tous vos amis se trouvent (enfin ceux qui utilisent ce service). Cette solution sociale utilise simplement votre GPS intégré à votre matériel, peu importe si vous êtes à la maison ou dans un café.

Je veux la dernière expérience d'apprentissage, afin non seulement de choisir et d’avoir des amis me suivant dans mon LMS, de pouvoir chatter avec eux ou qu’ils puissent lire mes flux, mais je veux aussi savoir où ils sont, et vice versa, ainsi si nous voulons nous rencontrer, nous le pourrons. Nous voulons profiter de cette prochaine étape de la collaboration et de la communication. Nous souhaitons développer une autre forme de médias sociaux - des «événements» - voir meetup.com à titre d'exemple, et tout imbriquer.

Alors, que pouvons-nous faire? Ajouter la géolocalisation dans le cadre de nos services d'apprentissage sociaux. Maintenant, je veux vivre une expérience encore plus grande, alors je vais ajouter un monde virtuel.

Mélanger dans les webinars programmés, le livecasting en temps réel, le streaming vidéo en temps réel, des avatars qui ont l'image du visage de votre interlocuteur et non celui de Sigmund le monstre marin, de communiquer en temps réel - avec des mini écrans vidéo entre les apprenants… Pendant que vous y êtes, vous ajouterez du monitoring, de tout, des montagnes de données. Oui, vous pourrez vous lancer dans le e-commerce, les API, les Mashups, et ajouter tous les médias sociaux que vous pensez. Les présentations slideshare? ok. Le partage d’application? Simple.

Dans quelle mesure nous sommes loin d'une telle application dans le monde réel? Pas très loin, surtout que la technologie, les vitesses de connexion et que la croissance continue de l'apprentissage social se poursuit. 5 ans? Facilement.

Nouveau terme: le social learning 3D - apprentissage, communication, collaboration, et expérience 3D

Votre LMS est votre plateforme, une communauté virtuelle d'apprentissage existe réellement dans/depuis/vers votre LMS.


Pour correspondre à tous les goûts des apprenants, les désirs et les objectifs de formation des entreprises, il faudrait énormément de fonctionnalités à une solution; et les vendeurs de LMS / LCMS semblent toujours avoir un temps de retard. Ce pourrait être quelque chose que personne n'a vu auparavant, ce qui serait inacceptable pour la plupart des vendeurs, mais cela pourrait exister.
